It's finally, truly official...

Today I received the notification that our 501 (c) (3) status is official!!

All contributions to Dance From the Heart are tax deductible... this will allow us to truly bring the vision much further in 2008. Once our September benefit is over, we will be ready to start working on the applications for anyone that wishes to have a chapter in their city or state.

To those that have been asking about this, and have been patiently waiting for me to get back with you... I thank you, and hope that you will be patient just a couple of weeks longer. We are ready to go as soon as the Sept 29th show is done.

And to think.. this started off in 2005 with a tribe conversation about how to help tsunami victims. Thanks to all that have helped throughout this process. I'm proud to be a part of a dance community that can make such wonderful things happen.

In order to move our Saturday rehearsals to an earlier time (to accommodate the pros that have gigs), we have relocated to:

Dominic Walsh Dance Studio
Houston, Tx 77006
Beginning: Saturday, August 11, 2007
Time 3:30pm to 6:30pm

There is parking behind the building and on Dunlavy street. When you arrive, come to the front door and ring the buzzer for Suite 210. Once you're in the building, take the stairs to the second level. The studio is at the top of the stairs. We are allowed to have bottled water. No street shoes on the dance floor. No food, snacks, or other drinks in the studio. Let me know if you have any questions.

Out with the Old, In with the New

You will notice that the post listing has drastically reduced... I did some house cleaning today, and deleted the majority of the old posts.

It's time to look at 2007.

Dance From The Heart is becoming a National Non-Profit organization. The first "official" board meeting was held today in Houston, and we have begun the process of getting the structure set. We still have to file paperwork for 501c3 status, but the biggest step was deciding what our goal was, how we would run the organization, and what we'd do this year. Here are a couple of key points from today's meeting:

Initial Board Members:

Anne Caruthers (Ayana), President
Aisa El-Hindi, Vice President (I haven't gotten permission to use Aisa's real name, so not doing it yet - those of you in Houston know her well.)
Shelley Fahrenthold (Silke), Secretary/Treasurer

The board will expand as needed to support the growing organization.

The overall mission of the organization is as follows (formal mission statement with better wording still being crafted):
DFTH is a multi-cultural charitable organization that will utilize dance performance as a means of awareness and fundraising to assist in humanitarian relief of world crisis events or conditions.

Houston's event is tentatively scheduled for late October of 2007.

Local chapters will be organized and partially funded from the National level.

We have had one request from Laila about the Sulukule... that is currently under consideration. My initial thought is that this definitely falls within the mission of the organization, and can be done from the state chapter level.

So... anyone that is still interested in participating in the goal of "dancers united to make the world a better place"... please feel free to post your thoughts. I don't want 2007 to slip away without anyone doing anything! We ARE moving forward!!!

Feel free to message me if you are interested in forming a state/local chapter, or otherwise being involved in the organization.

Dance From the Heart?

I'm just curious. Did anyone do anything in 2006? And who's got something planned for 2007, if anything?

Did anyone decide to really go for nonprofit status? If so... how did that work out, how does one do it...?

We have so many people who really seemed to pull together to try to make a difference because of one very serious, heart-wrenching event.

I'm sure that these same people are still concerned about others, no matter what cause they've taken up. I guess I'm asking this:

What are you doing now, to make a difference? Are you doing it on your own? Is your dance group doing something? Are you, as an individual, but not a dancer, doing things to make the world better?

Again, I'm just curious.

And hey... if you do have a cause, or an organization, or an event you're supporting... why not list it?

I personally just found found (Product)Red, and it seems kind of cool, an easy way to make a difference, even if it's a tiny difference.

http://www.joinred.com/

And I'm contemplating all sorts of other thoughts and ideas about ways we, as dancers, could make a difference in the lives of others. I was struck by Ayana's posting of the plight of the national dance troupe in Iraq. Her blog post is here:

http://people.tribe.net/ayana/blog/ca24a578-3ed8-4dc0-b177-303e992f3e30

The NY Times article is here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/30/arts/dance/30danc.html?_r=2&ref=arts&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

I wonder what we could do, as dancers, to be supportive of these artists.

Dialogue, anyone?
Moving Forward?

So we learned ALOT putting together this event here in Dallas and were thinking about how to apply that for perhaps a future event.

What are the thoughts here? Do you want to do it again? For those of you who do, how would you want to go about it?
IE:
We are entertaining the idea of setting up a 501c3 Dance from the Heart -North Texas Chapter . Chosing another fund raiser. We had a multi-dance event and think that keeping it more than just belly dance artists was a great idea to move forward with in the future.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

Although I was really dissapointd with the turn out, (we only raised $885 and I was aiming for at least twice that if not 3 times), the show was completely amazing. I was so thrilled with all of the performers. I've only been in Boston for 2 months and am quite proud of myself for putting on such an extravaganza without knowing anyone here. I've made a ton of really good friends in this process and it was so fun to watch the all dance their hearts out. I had the best time producing and got such good feedback. I had some people say that they were surprised that we got as many people to come on a winter evening in New England (I guess now really isn't the best time to put on events around here). But all in all, I was really happy with the evening and I'm not goint to be upset about the money part of it:)

It was a great day of events, merchants, raffles (sorry for taking all the prizes guys).... and it was wonderful to see people come through for us!....

Well, we didn't have near the turnout I'd hoped, but the quality of the show was really wonderful.

We will end up donating 903.35 to Oxfam America...

Everyone had a good time, and I think many of the teachers will have new students in class very soon. :-)

Hi, all!

Our event went quite well yesterday! We scheduled ourselves for a two hour show and went over by one hour! We had about 100 people show up and we raised about $1100! I'll be posting pics to this site but they're HUGE so I need to crop them.

We taped our Tsunami Telethon last Thursday night. The event coordinators are going to spend the next few weeks advertising the heck out of it then show it on the local network.

I'll let you know how we do :)

We had a fun show and a lot of supportive people. About 121 in seats.

First count net total is $802.26, every penny of which will go to Oxfam.

Not bad for a small event, small venue, and a lot of heart.

I was actually very shocked, and very warmed, by the donations from local businesses and artist. Helps me regain a bit of faith in humanity.

So...that's done. Good luck to the rest of y'all yet to do your events!
