Dance From the Heart?
I'm just curious. Did anyone do anything in 2006? And who's got something planned for 2007, if anything?
Did anyone decide to really go for nonprofit status? If so... how did that work out, how does one do it...?
We have so many people who really seemed to pull together to try to make a difference because of one very serious, heart-wrenching event.
I'm sure that these same people are still concerned about others, no matter what cause they've taken up. I guess I'm asking this:
What are you doing now, to make a difference? Are you doing it on your own? Is your dance group doing something? Are you, as an individual, but not a dancer, doing things to make the world better?
Again, I'm just curious.
And hey... if you do have a cause, or an organization, or an event you're supporting... why not list it?
I personally just found found (Product)Red, and it seems kind of cool, an easy way to make a difference, even if it's a tiny difference.

And I'm contemplating all sorts of other thoughts and ideas about ways we, as dancers, could make a difference in the lives of others. I was struck by Ayana's posting of the plight of the national dance troupe in Iraq. Her blog post is here:

I wonder what we could do, as dancers, to be supportive of these artists.
Dialogue, anyone?

Re: Whatever happened to...
Fri, November 3, 2006 - 11:48 PMIt's interesting that you ask this right at this time, Joy...
I had some other plans in progress this year, and hoped that they would come to fruition before December.. but, everything involved has made this project take its sweet time. The idea was to roll DFTH into it... however.. I am in the progress of completing the applications for the 501 (c) 3 status for DFTH. I am making serious plans (regardless of how this other project pans out) to move forward for 2007.
Several things have happened recently in my life that have become driving factors...culminating in a feeling of compulsion to do more work to benefit others.
My mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimers... my Aunt has been diagnosed with Leukemia... my brother-in-law - Parkinson's... my maternal grandmother had ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease)...I recently taught bellydance classes for cancer survivors that truly moved me... and several friends and one family member are cancer survivors. Each of these moments over the last several months has impacted me in a way that makes me feel that every moment I'm not working in the non-profit sector is a moment wasted.
There doesn't have to be a huge disaster to get us involved... my family members' various illnesses are each disasters in their own right in my mind... and it makes me want to do as much as possible to help others facing similar circumstances. I know that other dancers have the same issues with their friends or family members.
So, 2007 will bring non-profit status to at least one branch of DFTH. I'm not sure if the Dallas chapter went further with their plans or not, but they really seemed to have a good team of folks working very hard to make good things happen. Anybody from DFW out there wanna speak up?
But yes, things did kind of fizzle this year - I think people are very busy and find it hard to put an event together - there's so much going on that scheduling is a nightmare, finding time to put into it is challenging, and there's no disaster driving the urgency level... and let's face it, doing this is a LOT of hard work! I think there were 2 or 3 areas that put events on this year.. but I'm not sure.
If, however, anyone is interested in making a serious run at putting something together for 2007, I am SO willing to give any help I can to make it easier... and with non-profit status, gaining corporate sponsorship should be easier.
